Get that glow! The 10 steps of Korean skincare

If you’ve ever wondered how some people get that dewy, glassy skin, chances are they’re into Korean skincare. It might seem overwhelming at first — there’s talk of 10 steps, snail mucin, and sheet masks galore — but don’t worry, it’s not really as intense as it sounds. Korean skincare is more about building habits that feel good and making your skin happy.Ā

Here’s how the routine works, and why each step matters.

Step 1: Oil cleanser

Even if you don’t wear much makeup, an oil cleanser is great for removing sunscreen, excess oil, and the grime your face picks up during the day. As the first step of Korean Skincare, it melts everything off without drying your skin out. This is especially good if your skin leans toward dry or sensitive.

Step 2: Water-based cleanser

This second cleanse helps wash away any leftover residue. Think of it as ensuring your skin is a clean slate. Use something gentle — foaming or gel-based — depending on what your skin likes and needs. More oily? Go for foaming. More on the dry side? A water-based or gel-based cleanser might suit you better.

Step 3: Exfoliator (a few times a week)

You don’t need to scrub your face daily, but using a light exfoliant (chemical or physical) 2–3 times a week can help smooth things out and clear away dead skin. It also helps the rest of your products absorb better and work more effectively.

Step 4: Toner

Forget those alcohol-based toners that sting and dry out; Korean toners are typically watery and hydrating. They help rebalance your skin after cleansing and give it a light moisture boost before the next layers.

Step 5: Essence

Essence is super lightweight, but don’t skip it. It hydrates and helps your skin absorb serums better. This step feels especially great if your skin needs a bit more bounce or calm.

Step 6: Serum or ampoule

This is where things get more targeted. Want to fade dark spots? Add vitamin C. Need hydration? Hyaluronic acid. Serums are more concentrated, so they're great for tackling specific concerns.

Step 7: Sheet mask (when you feel like it)

You don’t have to use one every day, but you can think of it as a little self-care moment. Put one on, lie down for 15 minutes, and just chill. Your skin will thank you.

Step 8: Eye cream

The skin around your eyes is delicate, and a lightweight eye cream can help with puffiness or fine lines. A little goes a long way.

Step 9: Moisturizer

This seals everything in. Whether you prefer a light gel or a richer cream, pick what feels good on your skin and stick with it.

Step 10: SPF (in the morning)

This one’s non-negotiable. Even on cloudy days, sunscreen protects your skin from aging and damage. It’s the best long-term skincare step you can take.Ā

Skincare is more than just a beauty trend — it's a form of self-care that supports the health and appearance of your skin over time. The 10-step Korean skincare routine has become a global phenomenon, known for delivering healthy, glowing, ā€œglass-likeā€ skin. While it may seem intimidating at first, the process is less about rigid rules and more about building a consistent, enjoyable habit tailored to your skin’s needs. From gentle oil cleansers to SPF, each step plays a role in keeping the skin balanced, nourished, and protected.

For example, gentle exfoliation a few times a week can smooth texture and boost product absorption. Serums and essences target specific concerns like dullness or dehydration. Layering hydrating products, sealing it all in with a good moisturizer, and finishing with daily sunscreen are the building blocks of that radiant ā€œglass skinā€ glow.

What makes Korean skincare stand out is its emphasis on consistency and customization. You don't have to follow all ten steps every single day — the key is to be mindful and responsive to your skin’s condition.Ā

Ultimately, skincare should be a routine you look forward to, not a burden. It should be a daily ritual that leaves you feeling refreshed and confident. This skincare method encourages mindfulness, self-care, and a deeper connection to how your skin looks and feels. With consistency and the right products, the Korean skincare philosophy can help you achieve radiant, balanced skin — not through harsh treatments, but through gentle care and nourishment.Ā

It’s not just about looking good, but feeling good in your skin every day.
